Eco-Home Trends for 2010

24 Nov

The trend toward greener, more sustainable building underlies many design choices of today’s buyers. There is a strong connection between houses, energy use and sustainability. Here are seven green house features that will be in demand in 2010.

Energy Efficiency
Today’s home buyers would like to reduce their carbon footprint and save on utility bills. They want their home to be energy efficient. Low E Glass, R 38 insulation, high efficiency AC systems, passive solar orientation, solar panels, energy rated appliances, tankless water heaters, and LED lighting are some of the basics that buyers expect to find, or are willing to upgrade to.

Healthy Houses
Ten years ago there was no generalized concern about adhesives, pressboard products, high VOC paint, or off-gassing from carpet. For today’s health conscious buyers these features are top of mind. Their interest is getting deeper and more technical. Buyers are concerned about how construction materials were made, and the energy cost of transporting them. Today’s buyers prefer locally made or recycled products that are eco-friendly to produce, and safe to have in their homes. Insulation made from old blue jeans is a perfect fit. It can be produced in a sustainable way, avoids waste, and is poses no health hazard.

Alternative Energy
Energy produced on site is gaining ground. Neighborhood associations must now consider whether to allow solar panels and wind turbines on roofs. Homes that operate at “net-zero energy” are already possible. New alternative energy sources will become more cost effective. A popular recent trend has been the solar tube, and alternative to the skylight, to gather solar energy and reflect the light down a tube into the room.

Fewer Fireplaces
These have been a must since the 1980’s. However, today air pollution and the net heat loss from fireplaces matter more. Many have been converted to gas log systems. An alternative is the “direct vent” fireplace, which functions as a heating appliance. In warmer climates buyers may opt out of fireplaces altogether. On the other hand, outdoor fireplaces and fire pits are trending in.

Smaller Spaces
The green construction trend, plus the current economic slowdown, has led naturally to a reduction in excess space in homes. Smaller homes, clean lines, and less clutter resonate with today’s buyers. Formal living rooms or media rooms that are unconnected to other core areas tend to not be used. They may be converted to studies or left off altogether.

Hard Surface Floors
Hard surface floors are a part of the green trend. Carpets hold dirt, dust mites and other allergens. That “new carpet” smell comes from a mix of chemicals used to make the fiber, glues, pesticides, and fire retardants. Popular hard surfaces today are concrete, stone, cork, natural linoleum, bamboo, and wood. Bamboo, which grows a foot per day, is attractive and sustainable.

Walkability
There is more interest in walkability. People want to be able to stroll to parks, shopping, and schools. They are motivated to reduce their dependence on cars, save on gasoline, and improve personal and environmental heath. Home offices are in. Garages are being left off in some urban areas in favor of carports or open parking.

Germany gets the world’s first platinum rated data centre

24 Nov

Germany's_first_LEED_build.jpg

Germany is not behind the rest of the world with regard to eco-friendliness. Citi’s new Data Canter in Frankfurt has been awarded the first LEED accreditation ever in Germany and the first ever for a data center building. We all know that the energy used in data center buildings is much higher compared to other commercial buildings. This eco-friendly building has a sustainable design that brings a significant change in this buildings data consumption without compromising on operations.

The unique design of this building allows it to use only 30% of the power required for services that a conventional data centre would utilize and only 40% of the heating energy. It even uses an innovative reverse osmosis treatment which lets it save 35,950,000 liters of water per annum! The design of this complex is also pleasing to the eye and is an interesting combination of intelligently designed inhabited spaces and extensive green planes.

Here’s another concept that I would love to see in production! Designed by Stephanie Bellanger and friends, the Mobile Mini House is a house on wheels! Each room is separated by partitions – there’s the bathroom, living room, bedroom, kitchen and an office all in one. The rooms fan out to a 252° radius. For those of you who are worried about the weather, there’s also a sliding screen that encapsulates the house. It’s an indoor outdoor camping trailer for the modern day traveler.

Make Your Own of Mini Moss Ecosystem

24 Nov

make your own of mini moss ecosystem 1 Make Your Own of Mini Moss Ecosystem

These two little ecosystems are thriving with very little care. If you want to make your own this ecosystem, you can do it step by step :
1. Target sells the glass cookie jars for $10-20. Using cookie jars because they have the glass tops and a rubber seal.

2. Go to the park and look for moss covered rocks on walking trails. The moss will peal right off. Put in a large zip-lock bag. Try to get at least 4 different varieties to mix in the jars.

3. Add rocks to the bottom of the jars to allow for drainage. Fill a few inches with dirt (any dirt will do). Make the dirt uneven, little dips and valleys make for a better terrarium.

4. Place the moss in the jars. You don’t have to “plant” the moss, simply laying it on top of the dirt will do.

In the large terrarium you can added a branch, a rock, and a LEGO horse, however once the moss starts growing, it will cover up objects you may have placed in the jar. You can also added rubber bumpers on the bottom of the jars so they don’t slide around.

So there you have it, for under $20 you can have a cool Ecosystem moss terrarium.

Robotic Fish for Monitoring Water Pollution

24 Nov

robotic fish for monitoring water pollution 1 Robotic Fish for Monitoring Water Pollution

The water in Gijon, a harbor in Northern Spain will be monitored by robotic, battery-powered fish. These mechanical, articulating sea creatures were designed and tested by the Robotics Department at the University of Essex. At a cost of $3.6 million, through a European Union grant, these fish will test the water for oxygen levels, detect oil slicks and other contaminants pumped into the water. This is the first monitoring program of it’s kind, and the retrieved data could be very important, with implications for global warming and the state of our water sources.

Researchers at Essex have been testing out their fish prototypes in a special tank at the London Aquarium since 2005. Visitors have been wowed by the incredible ability of the robots to move just like a fish does. As Rory Doyle, a researcher on the project, says, “The design of fish which nature has produced is a very energy-efficient one. The fish’s efficiency is created by hundreds of millions of years’ of evolution. Submarines come nowhere near it.” This efficiency in movement will allow the robot to have a longer battery life and collect more data.

play colorful for modern design

24 Feb

Nowadays, many people are looking for something fresh to be apllied to their home. to make it comfortable and do not sense boring. their desires are manifasted in many ways that are designed to fill what these people want. yup, in my blog, I will sugest you how to mix a lot of different colours. It’s fun, you know. 🙂 lol. here I give you some pics to show you the real how of my idea. enjoy it. lol.

well, I think that yellow is the nicest color to mixe. but I warn you, take attention for it brightness. don’t until it looks silly when apllied. lol.

Bedroom for kid is good when you used your imagination to build and choose the right colours. just think about it and applied. lol.

did you remeber the purpose of posting this in my blog? yes, I want to give you a respon from your wants. the mixing colour shown in the picture above make a very comfortable living room. of course, you can give a touch of ethnic and modern beside mixing it colors. just give it try. lol. 🙂

one more suggestion for the comfortable look of living room using mixing colours idea. if you have a good sense of using it somehow to build fresh air and create a good mood, then, you have made a wonderfull choice. lol. 😀

well,  tell you again for the last time.

There is a fine line between playful and silly, and it can be difficult to determine where exactly that line is sometimes. If you want to incorporate playfulness, whimsy and fun into your modern interior without going over the top, I’ve got some tips for you.

  • Inject some youthfulness with bright colors. Yellows, pinks, purples and oranges are all fresh and funky colors that can be playful if used as accent walls, throw pillows or lighting fixtures.
  • Use patterns in conjunction with bright colors for even more playfulness. Striped sofas and dotted rugs can go a long way in bringing some fun into your home.
  • Consider wallpaper. While not the supreme trend lately, patterned, playful wallpaper can bring new life to a room that’s a little on the dull side.
  • Go for some contrast. Add surprising flashes of yellow amidst an all-white space, or a shag rug on a smooth wooden floor.
  • Think retro. Retro-mod is inherently playful. The bubble chair, bead curtains, and yes, even wood paneling can bring some nostalgia as well as playfulness into your home
  • Go on the hunt for cute accent pieces. Check out your local thrift stores and farmers markets for some whimsical accents, like carved wooden birds or wind chimes.

As with anything, keep moderation in mind. When you add playful elements to your home, it’s usually best to start small and increase from there, in order to let things grow organically. just give it try! lol.
